-Master’s Theses in Artificial Intelligence and Sleep Medicine +=====Multiple Ph.D. Positions in Machine Learning for Robotics and/or Computer Vision at the University of InnsbruckAustria=====
-Introduction: Isolated REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) is a sleep disorder characterized by abnormal muscle activity and dream enactment during REM sleep. Longitudinal studies have shown that up to 90% of iRBD patients convert to Parkinson’s disease (PD) after a decade. Therefore, iRBD is considered by now the strongest biomarker of early PD. Despite the relation between iRBD and PD is clearso far there are no biomarkers that could be used to predict the time to conversion from iRBD to PD.  +
-Aims of the theses: The aim of the theses is to investigate whether it is possible to identify biomarkers with artificial intelligence that can predict conversion of iRBD patients to PD. The biomarkers will be extracted from electrophysiological signals recorded during sleep. Two different projects are proposed.+

-- Project 1: In this project, features describing sleep instability and alterations in brain waves (EEG) will be extracted from the data and used to train and validate machine learning algorithms that can predict the risk of conversion to PD for iRBD patients. +The Intelligent and Interactive Systems lab headed by Justus Piater and Antonio Rodríguez Sánchez uses machine learning to enhance the flexibility, robustnessgeneralization and explainability of robots and vision systemsOf particular interest are methods for learning about structure, function, and other concepts that describe the world in actionable ways.
-  +
-- Project 2: In this projecta deep learning approach (i.e. without explicit feature extraction) will be investigated. Raw EEG data will be given in input to a deep neural network in order to predict the risk of conversion to PD for iRBD patients. +
-  +
-Interdisciplinary and international environment: The projects will be carried out in collaboration between the Department of Computer Science of the University of Innsbruck (ProfAntonio Rodríguez-Sánchez) and the Department of Neurology of the Medical University of Innsbruck (Matteo CesariPhD and Prof. Birgit Högl). The team is international and the work will be carried out in English. +
-Expected workload: It is expected that each project will last 8 months. A student salary for a workload of 20 hours per week is foreseen according to Austrian Science Fund (FWF) rules. The expected start is March/April 2022. +

-===== 2 Ph.D. Student Positions in Open-Ended Robot Learning at U. Innsbruck, Austria =====

-The [[@/|Intelligent and Interactive Systems]] group (Prof. Justus Piater and Dr. Matteo Saveriano) is looking for two talented Ph.D. candidates.+====One Project Position====

-====Scientific Context====+The research activity comprises the integration of robotic perception and execution mechanisms for task-oriented object manipulation in everyday environments. The (negotiable) focus is on affordance-driven object part segmentation and object manipulation using reinforcement learning.

-We would like to be able to equip our robots with almost arbitrary skills in unconstrained environments However, programming robot skills by hand is time consuming, and supervised and exploratory learning do not easily scale to complex and diverse tasks. Open-ended learning requires a combination of exploratory learning, explicit teaching, and the ability to reuse knowledge.+The position is already availableThe starting date is as soon as possible and will be defined with the selected candidate.

-====Position 1: Learning Large-Scale Robotic Knowledge Bases By Observing Humans====+For further information and applications, please send an email to [[Alejandro.Agostini@uibk.ac.at|Alejandro Agostini]].

-The goal of this project is to enable robotic devices to acquire knowledge about the task execution from human observation and to build a large scale database of robotic tasks. Modern computing technologies, like noSQL, graph databases and cloud computing, are leveraged to populate and query the knowledge base and plan tasks on-line. A large knowledge base will allow the robot to execute a multitude of tasks and, more importantly, can potentially allow the robot to reuse its knowledge in different scenarios in order to learn novel behaviors by self-practice. The Ph.D. candidate will also try to overcome the current imitation learning paradigm where the human is the only source of knowledge by adopting a bidirectional paradigm where the robot uses already acquired knowledge to assist the human during the teaching.

-This is a university assistant position that includes minor teaching requirements.+====Characteristics of All Positions====

-====Position 2Teaching Robots the Essence of Tasks====+The monthly gross salary is based on the [[https://www.fwf.ac.at/en/funding/steps-to-your-fwf-project/further-information/personnel-costs|FWF salary scale]] for doctoral candidates. Note that the gross monthly salary is paid 14 times per year. Furthermore, the university has numerous [[https://www.uibk.ac.at/universitaet/zusatzleistungen/|attractive offers for employees]].

-Most current work in robot learning focuses on learning trajectories or on mapping perception to action. However, tasks are characterized by the achievement of specific post-conditions; it is these the robot should understand, along with means to achieve and verify them. The objective of this research is to leverage explicit human teaching and other means to focus the attention of the robot to the crucial aspects of its perception/action space that define the task, allowing it to acquire complex skills in open-ended scenarios.
