Multiple Ph.D. Positions in Machine Learning for Robotics and/or Computer Vision at the University of Innsbruck, Austria

The Intelligent and Interactive Systems lab headed by Justus Piater and Antonio Rodríguez Sánchez uses machine learning to enhance the flexibility, robustness, generalization and explainability of robots and vision systems. Of particular interest are methods for learning about structure, function, and other concepts that describe the world in actionable ways.

Three University-Assistant Positions

These positions involve minor teaching duties. The specific research topics can be negotiated within the scope of the lab as summarized above.

One Project Position

The research activity comprises the integration of robotic perception and execution mechanisms for task-oriented object manipulation in everyday environments. The (negotiable) focus is on affordance-driven object part segmentation and object manipulation using reinforcement learning.

The position is already available. The starting date is as soon as possible and will be defined with the selected candidate.

Characteristics of All Positions

The monthly gross salary is based on the FWF salary scale for doctoral candidates. Note that the gross monthly salary is paid 14 times per year. Furthermore, the university has numerous attractive offers for employees.

Your Profile

Applicants must have

  • earned, or be about to earn, an M.Sc. degree or equivalent in computer science or other relevant area,
  • an excellent academic record,
  • a strong background in machine learning and in robotics or computer vision,
  • excellent mathematical and coding skills (C/C++, ROS, Python),
  • excellent written and oral communication skills in English, and
  • enthusiasm for leading-edge research, a team spirit and independent problem-solving skills.
