The research group in Intelligent and Interactive Systems (IIS), founded in 2010 by Prof. Justus Piater, has multiple openings at the doctoral and post-doctoral levels.

• Positions funded by the EU-FP-ICT “Cognitive Systems, Interaction and Robotics” projects Xperience (http://www.xperience.org/) and IntellAct (http://www.intellact.eu/)

• Non-permanent university research staff positions with minor teaching requirements

For both types of positions, we seek candiates in the following areas:

• robotic grasping and manipulation using one or two dextrous hands
• computer vision and haptic sensing for robotic grasping and manipulation
• robot learning by demonstration and exploration
• generalization of manipulation skills based on object parts and shapes
• extraction of generic knowledge from sensorimotor experience

Postdoctoral researchers are expected to assume active roles in project leadership and supervision of junior researchers.

Salaries are internationally competitive and commensurate with qualification and experience.

Applicants for a postdoctoral position should have earned, or be about to earn, a doctoral degree in a relevant area, possess a strong publication record commensurate with experience, and have demonstrated strengths in areas related to the above research topics, such as:

• robotic grasping or manipulation
• force/impedance robot control
• statistical machine learning
• probabilistic modeling and inference
• computer vision

Applicants for a doctoral studentship should have earned, or be about to earn, an M.Sc. degree or equivalent in a relevant area, possess an excellent academic record, and have demonstrated prior achievements in any of the above areas.

All applicants should possess good written and oral communication skills in English, a strong mathematical background, and programming experience in C++ and other languages. Enthusiasm for leading-edge research, a team spirit and independent problem-solving skills are essential.
